Hampton Native receives certificate of appreciation serving at Norfolk Navy Shipyard

(PORTSMOUTH, Va.) - A 2006 Denbigh High School graduate and Hampton, Virginia native, recently received the outstanding apprentice award from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) Apprentice Program.

Ms. Tiesha McFarland was one of 103 honor graduates and also received the outstanding apprentice award presented by the National Association of Superintendent at Willet Hall in Portsmouth, Virginia.

NNSY congratulated 180 graduates from its program. The graduates, represent 25 trades across the shipyard, and successfully completed a four-year training program, which includes academics, trade theory and on-the-job experience. Upon graduation, the apprentices received a Technician Career Studies Certificate and were converted to the journeymen level of their trade.  

McFarland, is a painter and mechanic who is responsible for the preservation of structures for U.S. nuclear vessels.  

She's worked for the Department of Defense for 5 years and has carried lessons learned from her hometown.

"The lessons of being fully committed displays integrity to do my job to the best of my abilities," said McFarland.

McFarland has military ties with family members who served in the military and is honored to carry on the family tradition working for the Department of Defense. 

“My husband, Atif McFarland, serves in the military as well as a host of family and friends," she said.
