SASEBO, Japan – A San Diego native and 2001 Kearny High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy with Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS).
Petty Officer 1st Class Christopher DeLawrence is a master-at-arms serving with the security department at Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, operating out of Sasebo, Japan.
A Navy master-at-arms is responsible for providing anti-terrorism and physical security force protection, while conducting law enforcement on Navy installations and assets.
“I grew up in a diverse neighborhood so I have an easy time relating to everyone that I come across,” said DeLawrence.
DeLawrence has mentored numerous sailors in his department. He takes pride in helping junior sailors and being a part of their growth and development. He also enjoys seeing his hard work pay off as well as seeing his department succeed.
Moments like that makes it worth serving around the world ready at all times to defend America’s interests. With more than 50 percent of the world's shipping tonnage and a third of the world's crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. The Navy's presence in Sasebo is part of that long-standing commitment, explained Navy officials.
“It’s difficult being away from family but at the same time it feels good to know you’re a part of the bigger mission out here,” said DeLawrence. "The Navy has given me structure and organization in life. I’ve also become better at public speaking, things that will benefit me in the future.”
As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, DeLawrence and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.
“I enjoy serving at this command because I always meet a lot of new people,” said DeLawrence. “I also appreciate the leadership and chain of command who feel like family.”
