WASHINGTON, D.C. - Lt. Cmdr. Desmond Walker, a Simmons High School alumnus and Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science graduate and Hollandale, Mississippi, native, was selected by a board of U.S. Navy Admirals and Captains for the Surface Warfare Officer career milestone of Commander Command Afloat. He will have a future assignment to command a US Navy ship. An assignment to command places an individual in the highest position of authority and accountability.
Walker is considered one of the best and fully qualified officers whose previous performance clearly reflect the leadership core values the Navy equates with successful commanding officers.
Walker enlisted in the Navy in July 1996 as an electronics technician. After his selection in the Seaman to Admiral-21 program, he attended the Hampton Roads NROTC and graduated from Norfolk State University in 2005 with a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Technology. He also earned a Master of Engineering Management from Old Dominion University in 2012.
He currently serves on the personal staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N00Z) as a Special Assistant and Navy Liaison Officer to the Commandant of the Marine Corps Strategic Initiatives Group, an active duty strategic think tank.
