Eldridge Native Serves at Navy Operational Support Center Pearl Harbor

by Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class William J. Blees

PEARL HARBOR – A 2016 North Scott High School graduate and Eldridge, Iowa, native is serving at Navy Operational Support Center (NOSC) Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Kalahan Baker, a personnel specialist, is responsible for maintaining and entering data into enlisted service records, providing enlisted with information and counseling about Navy occupations, provide pay and entitlement information to individual members, and more.

"We assist reservists with processing travel arrangements in order to fulfill mission requirements,” Baker said. “I am also part of the base Auxiliary Security Force and stand guard at entry points.”

Baker has been able to experience a lot of unique opportunities in the Navy, but one stands out the most.

“I was able to meet Chris Pratt and other cast members from Jurassic World as a reward for being Blue Jacket of the Quarter and Year,” Baker said.

Achieving Blue Jacket of the Year is one of many ways for Sailors to stand out amongst their peers.

The Blue Jacket of the Quarter recognizes the very best all-around Sailors in paygrades E-1 through E-4. Sustained superior performance, leadership, self-improvement, command and community involvement, self-expression, military bearing, and appearance are all key facets of the best all-around Sailors.

Though Baker isn’t close to home, he is grateful for the opportunity to travel and the memories he has made.

“I joined the Navy to be a part of something greater than myself and see the world,” Baker said. “I have been able to meet people from all around the world and get to experience a life most do not.”

NOSC Pearl Harbor provides support to more than 30 reserve units comprised of more than 500 Sailors. These units provide strategic depth to operational staffs, intelligence units, construction battalions, and medical facilities all over the Pacific theater of operations.
