Carswell helps Naval Submarine Support Facility (NSSF) New London meet its mission to support the United States Naval Submarine Force by maintaining firefighting equipment and training submariners on how to fight shipboard fires and respond to shipboard casualties. Currently, she conducts atmospheric tests in confined spaces on the submarines to ensure those spaces are safe and the submariners are able to conduct their work freely and meet mission.
“My favorite part of my job is seeing different situations that can occur during an emergency and learning exactly how to combat those situations, making me able to handle real life situations,” she said. “Crawling into new parts of naval vessels and seeing what many won’t see from the outside is awesome.”
Carswell said she enlisted to travel the world, learn, start a career and be a part of something larger than herself.
Her proudest achievement has been making Northeast Region Sailor of the Year and demonstrating to her peers that even out of their comfort zone, they can be successful. She also said she enjoys the Submarine Force for the friends that she has made.
“My favorite aspect of the Submarine Force would have to be the camaraderie,” she said.
Carswell supports fast-attack submarines which are flexible, multi-mission platforms designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operation forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and mine warfare.
Carswell will now go on to compete at the United States Fleet Forces level this March.
