Creed joined the Navy three years ago.

“I joined the Navy to follow in my family member’s footsteps,” said Creed. “My brother joined the Navy two years before I did. It was cool to go to his bootcamp graduation, then two years later to find myself in the same place.”

Today, Creed serves as a musician, assigned to Navy Band Northwest.

Navy Band Northwest is the premier United States Navy musical organization in the Pacific Northwest Region. Performing nearly 500 engagements each year, Navy Band Northwest enjoys an outstanding reputation throughout the Pacific Northwest. Through military ceremonies, public concerts and regional tours, Navy Band Northwest serves to heighten esprit-de-corps throughout military and civilian communities, promote patriotism and increase public awareness of the Navy's mission. This 35-member unit is comprised of professional musicians, each performing in various ensembles including Ceremonial and Parade bands, Wind Ensemble, a Popular Music Group, a New Orleans style Brass Band and several chamber ensembles such as Brass and Woodwind Quintets. Navy Band Northwest is one of nine official U.S. Navy Bands located throughout the continental United States, Hawaii, Italy and Japan. Navy Band Northwest is under the operational command of Commander, Navy Region Northwest.

“Navy Weeks are important because they show the public everything that the Navy has to offer,” said Creed. “When we come to places like Denver, we give landlocked cities that don’t have a large Navy presence the chance to learn about who we are and what we do.”

Navy Weeks are the service’s signature outreach program. They are designed to give citizens the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity. Additionally, Navy Weeks strengthen the service’s ties to the community.

Navy Weeks focus on a variety of outreach assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of events with key influencers and organizations across the market. During a Navy Week, 75-100 outreach events occur in partnership with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations throughout the city.

Organizations supporting Denver Navy Week include Navy Band Northwest, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, United States Ceremonial Guard, Navy Talent Acquisition Group Rocky Mountain, and Navy History and Heritage Command. During the week, the organizations participate in a variety of community outreach events, such as playing music for veterans at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons, touring TinkerMill Makerspace, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, visiting Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, volunteering with Denver Urban Gardens, and so much more. The week will conclude at the Great Colorado Air Show Sunday, October 17, featuring the Blue Angels, where attendees will be able to interact with sailors throughout the day.

All participating commands are following Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state, and local guidelines for safety during the current pandemic.

The Navy's senior executive host is Vice Admiral John Mustin, Chief of Navy Reserve, and Commander, Navy Reserve Force, who will participate in community engagements as well as meet with local businesses, and civic, education, and government leaders.

“I am excited to represent the Navy and engage with the city of Denver and the great state of Colorado,” said Mustin. “Colorado has a rich Naval history, with 32 ships having been named for the state, its cities, and people, including the nuclear-powered submarine USS Colorado and the amphibious transport ship USS Mesa Verde. The Front Range embodies adventure, self-reliance, and service. Those qualities are consistent with the Navy’s service ethos and have attracted more than six thousand active and reserve force sailors to join our ranks. Those qualities also continue to connect the citizens of the area to our nation’s maritime services, specifically our Navy.”

Dr. James Hansen, a University of Colorado Boulder alum and the current Superintendent of the Naval Research Laboratory's Marine Meteorology Division will also participate in executive-level engagements for Denver Navy Week. During his time at CU Boulder, Hansen earned a BS and MS in Aeronautical Engineering and played on the CU football team. He was a member of three Big 8 Championship teams, a member of the 1990 National Championship team, and was a team captain during the 1992-93 season.

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Creed, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

"To me, serving in the Navy is the chance to play my instrument while serving the country," added Creed.

Denver Navy Week is one of 13 Navy Weeks in 2021, focusing a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects. Each year, the program reaches more than 140 million people -- about half the U.S. population.
