MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 2nd Class John Paul Delossantos, a native of San Diego, California, serves the U.S. Navy aboard USS Portland, a U.S. Navy San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship.
"I do the administrative work to ensure our service members on board get paid," said Delossantos.
Delossantos joined the Navy seven years ago to be on the Navy Boxing team.
"My original aspirations were to joining the Navy Boxing team," said Delossantos. "I stayed in because I had excellent mentors that encouraged me to take advantage of the leadership opportunities the Navy offers. I wanted to become the best version of myself."
According to Delossantos, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in San Diego.
"I grew up as an Air Force brat, and seeing how disciplined my dad was growing up was a positive influence on me and supported my professional development," said Delossantos. "In the Navy, I have learned that not everything is about me. The things I do are bigger than myself."
Homeported in San Diego, California, USS Portland is named after the U.S. city of Portland, Oregon. The ship is designed to transport Marines and their equipment.
According to Navy officials, amphibious transport dock ships are warships that embark, transport and land elements of a landing force for a variety of expeditionary warfare missions.
"Serving aboard Portland, I know my little piece in the puzzle supports mission accomplishments," said Delossantos.
Serving in the Navy means Delossantos is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.
While there are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers, Delossantos is most proud of being named Sailor of the Year.
"It encouraged me to do more for my command and step into the role I was recognized for," said Delossantos.
As a member of the U.S. Navy, Delossantos, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.
"I can barely put the feeling into words," added Delossantos. "My homeland is the Philippines, and their military presence maintains order in the country. I know that my service in the U.S. Navy is ensuring the preservation of my people and their culture."
