Nangeroni joined the Navy seven years ago. Today, Nangeroni is assigned to the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard.

Established in 1931, the United States Navy Ceremonial Guard is the official ceremonial unit of the Navy. Located at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington, D.C., the Navy Ceremonial Guard’s primary mission is to represent the service in Presidential, Joint Armed Forces, Navy, and public ceremonies in and around the nation’s capital.

Members of the Navy Ceremonial Guard participate in some of our nation’s most prestigious ceremonies, including Presidential inaugurations and arrival ceremonies for foreign officials. In addition, the Navy Ceremonial Guard serves as the funeral escort and conducts all services for Navy personnel buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

This week, members of the Navy Ceremonial Guard are participating in the Denver Navy Week.

“Navy Weeks in general are a great opportunity for the Navy as a whole,” said Nangeroni. “They give commands like ours the opportunity to give back to local communities, especially in areas such as Denver where there is not a very large Navy presence. They’re a great opportunity for us to go to local communities and remind everyone about our service and what we do. After all, we’re all volunteers in the first place, so Navy Weeks allow us to be volunteers at the home front by helping out these local communities.”

Navy Weeks are the service’s signature outreach program. They are designed to give citizens the opportunity to learn about the Navy, its people and its importance to national security and prosperity. Additionally, Navy Weeks strengthen the service’s ties to the community.

Navy Weeks focus on a variety of outreach assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of events with key influencers and organizations across the market. During a Navy Week, 75-100 outreach events occur in partnership with corporate, civic, government, education, media, veterans, community service and diversity organizations throughout the city.

Organizations supporting Denver Navy Week include Navy Band Northwest, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group 1, United States Ceremonial Guard, Navy Talent Acquisition Group Rocky Mountain, and Navy History and Heritage Command. During the week, the organizations participate in a variety of community outreach events, such as playing music for veterans at the Veterans Community Living Center at Fitzsimons, touring TinkerMill Makerspace, volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, visiting Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, volunteering with Denver Urban Gardens, and so much more. The week will conclude at the Great Colorado Air Show Sunday, October 17, featuring the Blue Angels, where attendees will be able to interact with sailors throughout the day.

All participating commands are following Department of Defense, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, state, and local guidelines for safety during the current pandemic.

The Navy's senior executive host is Vice Admiral John Mustin, Chief of Navy Reserve, and Commander, Navy Reserve Force, who will participate in community engagements as well as meet with local businesses, and civic, education, and government leaders.

“I am excited to represent the Navy and engage with the city of Denver and the great state of Colorado,” said Mustin. “Colorado has a rich Naval history, with 32 ships having been named for the state, its cities, and people, including the nuclear-powered submarine USS Colorado and the amphibious transport ship USS Mesa Verde. The Front Range embodies adventure, self-reliance, and service. Those qualities are consistent with the Navy’s service ethos and have attracted more than six thousand active and reserve force sailors to join our ranks. Those qualities also continue to connect the citizens of the area to our nation’s maritime services, specifically our Navy.”

Dr. James Hansen, a University of Colorado Boulder alum and the current Superintendent of the Naval Research Laboratory's Marine Meteorology Division will also participate in executive-level engagements for Denver Navy Week. During his time at CU Boulder, Hansen earned a BS and MS in Aeronautical Engineering and played on the CU football team. He was a member of three Big 8 Championship teams, a member of the 1990 National Championship team, and was a team captain during the 1992-93 season.

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Nangeroni, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

"The Navy’s slogan is ‘Honor, courage, commitment,’" added Nangeroni. “I think that by serving in the Navy you can embody all three of those words in different ways. With ‘commitment,’ we are volunteers, and we make the decision to serve our country. The ‘courage’ piece comes from going out to see, utilizing our training and putting ourselves in harm’s way to protect family back home. ‘Honor’ is especially visible at this command. The Navy Ceremonial Guard’s primary mission is to assist with all of the funerals at Arlington National Cemetery. So, we take the Navy personnel who pass away and honor them in a special way with their families present. Those three pieces are why I am proud to say I am a sailor.”

Denver Navy Week is one of 13 Navy Weeks in 2021, focusing a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a weeklong series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects. Each year, the program reaches more than 140 million people -- about half the U.S. population.
