The Maritime Expeditionary Security Force (MESF) operates ashore, at sea and in the waters of harbors, rivers, bays and across the littorals. The primary focus of MESF is to conduct maritime security operations. They do this by providing port and harbor security as well as security for high-value units, like aircraft carriers and submarines, on coastal waterways and ashore.
Fireman Luis Ascanoa Llerena, with family ties to Headland, Alabama, is one of these sailors serving at Maritime Security Squadron 2 which is responsible for protecting the Navy’s maritime platforms and port infrastructure.
“I'm originally from Peru and met my wife in Lima while she was on vacation there in 2017,” said Ascanoa Llerena. "My wife has family in Alabama. Her name is Anna Lauren Richburg."
Ascanoa Llerena joined the Navy two years ago. Today, Ascanoa Llerena serves as an electrician's mate.
“I joined the Navy because I wanted to be part of something larger than myself,” said Ascanoa Llerena. "I wanted to give back to this country that has given so much to me. I've been given so many opportunities in this country. I want to make my family and my country proud."
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Ascanoa Llerena serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
"We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day," said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. "Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs."
Ascanoa Llerena has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I'm most proud of getting everything done that needs to be done,” said Ascanoa Llerena. "My shipmates are relying on me, and I don't want to let them down."
Ascanoa Llerena can take pride in serving America through military service.
“Serving in the Navy helps my family, my community and my country,” added Ascanoa Llerena. "I'm on a good path to achieve my goals thanks to the Navy."
