Sailor from Guam earns award at Naval Supply Corps School

By Ashley Craig, Navy Office of Community Outreach

MILLINGTON. Tenn. – Ensign Ryan Batac, from Latte Heights, Guam, recently received an award for their performance while training to join the Navy Supply Corps.

Batac graduated from George Washington High School in 2009. Additionally, Batac earned a degree from Columbia College of Missouri in 2021.

Batac, 1st Battalion, Class 24010, received the Leadership Management Excellence Award while attending the Basic Qualification Course (BQC), at Naval Supply Corps School, in Newport, Rhode Island. Batac graduated from the course on March 29.

“The experience gained from my time as an enlisted sailor on submarines gave me a good foundation of leadership,” said Batac. “I take pride in saying I am a part of the small community of sailors who are known for being placed in positions they aren’t necessarily ready for but find a way to succeed. As a former culinary specialist (submarines), the challenges I saw as a junior sailor and as a chief petty officer have all contributed to what I am today.”

Considered to be one of the Navy’s greatest assets, supply officers must first train and be mentored at Naval Supply Corps School. Before any type of extraordinary achievement, the students must first pass a rigorous course structure to become a Navy supply officer.

“Being awarded the Leadership Management Excellence Award is a huge honor for me,” said Batac. “I am heading to another submarine, which will be familiar in some ways, but I am expecting that a different class of submarine (Virginia) and having a different role on the crew will provide new challenges that I am excited to take on. With my 12 years of experience in Ohio-class submarines, many procedures, habits of sailors and watch team dynamics will be foreign to me, so being recognized for the leadership portion of our curriculum gives me some comfort in knowing that at the end of the day, despite the hurdles I will face, I will be competent enough to take care of my people when it matters the most.”

Batac joined the Navy 12 years ago. Today, Batac serves as a supply officer.

Navy supply officers ensure sailors have the tools and equipment they need to deter any threat and maintain warfighting readiness.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Batac serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.

The mission of Naval Supply Corps School is to provide students with the personal and professional foundations for success. This mission lends itself to the vision of the school, which is to ensure all supply corps officer graduates are prepared to provide global logistics support to the Navy.

Once these service members finish training, they are deployed around the world putting their skill set to work.

Batac is assigned to serve with USS Illinois, homeported in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
