Mize graduated from Burbank High School in 2019.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Burbank

“I worked in plumbing growing up,” Mize said. “Through that I learned how to work in harsh environments. Working in a submarine is a dynamic environment and I found myself easily adapting because of the tough working conditions I experienced before."

Mize joined the Navy three years ago. Today, Mize serves as an information systems technician.

“During high school, I had several injuries that prevented me from going to school,” Mize said. "I also wanted to get on the job training while receiving educational benefits for later in life. The Navy afforded the best opportunity to work hands-on right after school. After talking to several branches, the Navy had job opportunities that were best suited for my skill set. I was able to be an information systems technician (network) on submarines, which was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Naval Base Point Loma provides support to 70 U.S. Pacific Fleet commands headquartered on the base, including five nuclear-powered fast attack submarines. The base is also home to Cabrillo National Park and the Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, which averages more than 1.2 million visitors annually.

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Mize has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“My proudest accomplishment is being designated system administrator for the submarine,” Mize said. "I am proud of that because I was provided the opportunity to fulfill a leadership role that is usually done by a chief petty officer as only a second class. Not only does the job come with financial incentives, but it also comes with leadership experiences that will allow me to continue to advance professionally."

Mize serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

“Being in the Navy means serving a purpose greater than yourself,” Mize said. "There are so many resources and opportunities that the Navy creates. I get the chance to not only create a plethora of opportunities for myself, but I also get to serve my country, which very few get to do. From dive school to applying to the Naval Academy, the Navy can provide endless educational opportunities if you ask for them.”

Mize is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank my grandma, Marilyn Huff, and my girlfriend, Ally Gregg,” Mize added. "My grandma raised me to be the man I am today. They both motivate me every day to be the best version of myself. I go beyond my limits every day because of them."
