Sand Springs native serves as Navy recruiter with NTAG Golden Gate

By Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Petty Officer 2nd Class Jacob Rampy, a native of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, serves as a Navy recruiter assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Golden Gate located in Mountain View, California.

Rampy joined the Navy five years ago.

"I felt a calling to serve and protect the men and women of our great country," Rampy said.

Skills and values learned in the Navy are similar to those found in Sand Springs.

"One of my strengths has always been building rapport," Rampy said. "I've noticed that this trait has helped me mentor future sailors and make sure that they leave for Recruit Training Command fully prepared."

Rampy previously served aboard USS Ronald Reagan as an aviation boatswain's mate (handling) before deciding to become a Navy recruiter to better his leadership skills.

"I wanted to share my story of why I joined with those who are interested in the military and guide them to be successful," Rampy said. "When I got to NTAG Golden Gate, I told myself that every future sailor of mine will be successful and will be fully prepared for Recruit Training Command."

According to Rampy, recruiting came with some challenges.

"At first, one of my biggest challenges was being confident while talking to people," Rampy said. "I was so nervous, hoping I was saying everything correctly. Then I realized that I just have to be myself. If you have to change yourself to recruit, you will have a hard time, but being yourself and understanding that you are there to help the applicants and mentor them, then you will be good."

Rampy believes recruiting is important and enjoys helping others.

"Recruiting is important to me because we need sailors in the fleet," Rampy said. "We are the first step in making sure that we get people into the world’s greatest Navy. One of the best parts of recruiting for me is seeing them become "official" sailors when they come back from Recruit Training Command. It makes me happy helping people change their lives for the better and showing them that the Navy can help them out and showing them that they can be successful."

According to Navy officials, NTAG Golden Gate's mission is to leverage an inspirational culture that informs, attracts, influences and hires the highest quality candidates from America's diverse talent pool. This goal ensures the success of America's Navy and establishes the foundation for sailors to thrive in a life-changing experience.

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Rampy serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

Rampy has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

"My proudest accomplishments are being named Medium Station of the Year, NCM and Recruiter of the Month for May and receiving a Flag Letter of Commendation from Rear Adm. Waters," Rampy said.

Rampy wishes to further his military career as a Navy recruiter.

"I want to pursue recruiting as a career because recruiting has given me so much hope to stay in the Navy," Rampy said. "Recruiting has given me a passion to keep on mentoring future sailors and applicants to grow and to show them that the Navy is amazing. One unique part of recruiting is that if you put in the effort to recruit, you will be rewarded. Recruiting is a place where you will be successful if you put in the effort. If you only do the bare minimum, what rewards will you get? If you strive to be great and give it 110% every day, it will show."

Rampy can take pride in serving America through military service.

"The Navy has given me opportunities to be a leader and to understand that anyone can make a difference," Rampy added. "I feel like the Navy is my calling in life, and I want to keep on sharing with the world how great the Navy is. Also, the best part of the Navy is traveling. I love getting to learn about different cultures and trying different foods."
