Birmingham Native and Mine Hunter Serves with the U.S. Navy Half a World Away

By Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class Robert Zahn, Navy Office of Community Outreach

SASEBO, Japan – A Birmingham, Alabama, native and 2011 Pelham High School graduate is serving in Japan in the U.S. Navy aboard one of the forward-deployed mine countermeasures ship, USS Warrior.

Lt. j.g. Tyler Trumbly is a combat information officer (CICO) aboard the Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship, operating out of Sasebo, Japan. The ship routinely deploys to protect alliances, enhance partnerships, and be ready to respond if a natural disaster occurs in the region.

A Navy combat information officer is overall in charge of the combat information center (CIC) aboard the ship. Their team is responsible for operating radars, navigation equipment, and communication equipment. They are responsible for the collection and dissemination of all combat information required for the ship to assess the tactical situation, and successfully employ the unique combat capabilities of the complex warship.

Trumbly is proud to serve in the Pacific and fondly recalls memories of Birmingham.

“The biggest thing I learned from back home was to treat everyone with respect,” said Trumbly. “I’m almost the same age as most of the crew but I’ve learned how to respect them on the same level. I respect everyone with the respect they deserve, no matter their rank. I learn just as much form them as they learn from me.”

Trumbly thus far is most proud of being a leader on the ship. He strives in teaching the crew how to be better sailors. The command has given him many opportunities to take charge in different programs. After noticing the opportunities provided, he has taken full responsibility and ran with the programs. He feels a sense of ownership being part of the USS Warrior.

Moments like that makes it worth serving around the world ready at all times to defend America’s interests. With more than 50 percent of the world's shipping tonnage and a third of the world's crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. The Navy's presence in Sasebo is part of that long-standing commitment, explained Navy officials.

With a crew of more than 80, USS Warrior is 224 feet long and weighs approximately 1,300 tons. USS Warrior is one of the Navy’s 11 Avenger-class mine countermeasures ships that are designed to neutralize mines from vital waterways and harbors. There are four minesweepers in Sasebo as part of the forward-deployed mine countermeasures force that are on-call to respond in the event of a mine-clearing operation in the Indo-Pacific.

MCMs in Sasebo routinely operate with allies and partners to build mine countermeasures proficiency and sustain our alliances.

“It’s hard work being deployed here. We have a small crew and we do the same workload as some other ships with a bigger crew. We all wear multiple hats on this ship,” said Trumbly. “I do enjoy being deployed here. I wanted to be here so I can see Japan, to see other parts of Asia and the world.”

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Trumbly and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.

“I serve in the Navy to serve my country, giving back to the country that stands for things that are right and important,” said Trumbly. “I’m part of a ship that’s always ready and strives to be the best we can be so that we can defend democracy and freedom in our country and around the world.”

Seventh Fleet, which is celebrating its 75th year in 2018, spans more than 124 million square kilometers, stretching from the International Date Line to the India/Pakistan border; and from the Kuril Islands in the North to the Antarctic in the South. Seventh Fleet's area of operation encompasses 36 maritime countries and 50 percent of the world’s population with between 50-70 U.S. ships and submarines, 140 aircraft, and approximately 20,000 sailors in the 7th Fleet.
