SASEBO, Japan – A Gray, Georgia, native and 2012 Jones County High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy with Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS).

Petty Officer 2nd Class Shelby Tucker is a mass communication specialist serving with the media department at Commander Fleet Activities Sasebo, operating out of Sasebo, Japan.

A Navy mass communication specialist is responsible for telling the Navy’s story through journalism, photography, videography and graphic design.

“Growing up in Georgia, I met a lot of different types of people,” said Tucker. “Because of that I am more accepting of a more diverse community.”

Tucker’s produest accomplishment in the Navy was receiving the Navy Achievement Medal.

Moments like that makes it worth serving around the world ready at all times to defend America’s interests. With more than 50 percent of the world's shipping tonnage and a third of the world's crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. The Navy's presence in Sasebo is part of that long-standing commitment, explained Navy officials.

“I love being stationed here because I'm in Japan,” said Tucker. “I get to travel to other countries and experience different cultures while getting paid for it.”

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Tuckerand other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.

“I genuinely love being in the Navy,” said Tucker. “It’s opened a lot of doors and taught me so much that I didn’t even know I didn’t know.”
