Aki Nichols is a public affairs officer working at the public affairs office at Commander, Fleet Activities Sasebo, operating out of Sasebo, Japan.
A Navy public affairs officer is responsible for handling media request and command messaging.
“Lynchburg is a very friendly open place and I think that’s a life lesson that I’ve taken everywhere I go,” said Nichols. “It has served me both in the military and now the civilian world.”
Nichols’proudest accomplishment has been qualifying as a Navy public affairs officer.
“Being forward deployed is something that I fell in love with,” said Nichols. “This place it reminds me of my hometown and that’s why I have been here for so long. The Navy gave me a way to serve and fulfill the need for service, not just for the country, but to others.”
As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Nichols and other employees know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.
“Serving with the Navy makes me as proud as I can be and humble as I can be,” said Nichols.
Seventh Fleet, which is celebrating its 75th year in 2018, spans more than 124 million square kilometers, stretching from the International Date Line to the India/Pakistan border; and from the Kuril Islands in the North to the Antarctic in the South. Seventh Fleet's area of operation encompasses 36 maritime countries and 50 percent of the world’s population with between 50-70 U.S. ships and submarines, 140 aircraft, and approximately 20,000 sailors in the 7th Fleet.
