NORFOLK – A 2007 Nazareth Academy graduate and Burr Ridge, Illinois, native is serving in the U.S. Navy with Expeditionary Strike Group 2 (ESG 2).

Lt. Andy Muscarello is a surface warfare officer with the group operating out of Norfolk, Virginia.

A Navy surface warfare officer is responsible for driving, maintaining, and fighting warships when in they are in harm’s way.

“I like that I get to socialize and communicate with other operations specialists on watches,” said Muscarello. "When you’re underway, it's easy to see the difference you make."

Revel credits his success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned in his hometown of Burr Ridge.

“Hard work and drive will get you everything you want,” said Muscarello.

ESG 2 was in 2007 as an integrated Navy and Marine Corps headquarters staff of 76 personnel and 23 subordinate commands. The mission of the command is to provide timely, operational, amphibious expertise in support of national tasking to sustain maritime security and defense of the nation.

“When you’re working with a strike group command you get a great view of the larger tactical picture,” said Muscarello.

Though there are many ways for a sailor to earn distinction in their command, community, and career, Revel is most proud of having a successful tour as an auxiliary officer.

“It was difficult, challenging and the sailors were the hardest-working,” said Muscarello.

While serving in the Navy may present many challenges, Muscarello has found reward in service.

“I am proud of having a successful tour as an auxiliary officer,” Muscarello said. “I’ve learned plenty from the fine sailors I’ve served with.”
