LEMOORE, Calif. – A 2011 South Pontotoc High School graduate and Pontotoc, Mississippi, native is serving in the U.S. Navy with Commander Strike Fighter Wing, U.S. Pacific Fleet.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Mathew Baggett works as an aviation ordnanceman and operates out of Naval Air Station Lemoore, California.

A Navy aviation ordnanceman is responsible for maintenance and clearing off all gun systems.

“I learned moral character and holding myself to a higher standard growing up,” said Baggett. “It helps with leadership. I can let others know when you're down someone is there to pick you up. I can also have conversations with respect. I am a better man.”

The strike fighter wing, headquartered at NAS Lemoore, ensures that each squadron is fully combat-ready to conduct carrier-based, all-weather, attack, fighter and support missions for the Pacific Fleet.

Sailors stationed in Lemoore are responsible for the operation of the airfield, providing services and support to the Naval Air Station, tenant and transiting aircraft. They also provide firefighting functions, both structural and rescue and conduct shipboard firefighting training.

“I’m the first in my family to join the military,” said Baggett. “I wanted to do something different. I wanted to be able to give back.”

Baggett is also proud of this command.

“I like the brother and sisterhood,” said Baggett. “I also enjoy my job. It has allowed me to go everywhere. I can see the world and help others.”

With the CSFWP consisting of more than 20 squadrons, highly specialized jobs range from training new aviators to maintaining airframes and engines, to handling and flying aircraft.

As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied-upon assets, Baggett and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs.

“Serving in the Navy gives me a sense of pride,” Baggett added. “I can stand with my head held high. I am a role model and influence for tomorrow's future. It gives me the ability to be a leader.”
