Frazee Native Volunteers in Fargo Community

by Rick Burke, Navy Office of Community Outreach

FARGO, N.D. - A 1996 Frazee High School graduate and Frazee, Minnesota, native recently volunteered for the Greater Plains Food Bank during Fargo-Moorhead Metro Navy Week.

Petty Officer 1st Class Jamie Kunz is a fire controlman serving with Navy Talent Group Acquisition Group Minneapolis. She works on radars and missile systems on naval ships and is responsible for big main frame computer systems that take multiple sensors and incorporates them into a picture. These pictures let everyone determine any contacts that are friendly or not.

When asked what it means to her to volunteer in the Fargo community, Kunz said, "Just giving back to the community and spending a few hours packing things to families in need, gives me a warm feeling knowing that I am helping someone else and paying it forward."

The Great Plains Food Bank's mission is to end hunger in North Dakota and western Minnesota through community partnerships. They are the largest hunger-relief organization in North Dakota and serve as its only food bank. They work together with hundreds of food industry donors and charitable feeding programs, and thousands of volunteers and financial supporters, creating hunger-free communities.

Kunz has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition.

"My father served in the Army for a few years in Vietnam," she said. "I have two cousins who are currently in the Navy. My female cousin, Kristie, serves over in Italy and male cousin, Lee, is in Pensacola, Florida. My sister is in the Navy and currently works in same office as I do in Fargo and my other cousin, Tammy, retired from the Air Force after 27 years of service. It's an honor to follow in my father's footsteps and to be serving with my sister and cousins protecting our country."

Kunz's proudest accomplishment serving in the Navy is her family having the opportunity to witness her promotion to petty officer second class.

"My family is from the Midwest and this was the only time that they were able to witness any accomplishment I achieved while serving," she said.

Navy Weeks focus a variety of assets, equipment and personnel on a single city for a week-long series of engagements designed to bring America's Navy closer to the people it protects. It brings sailors from different units across the United States to conduct focused outreach events with members of the community in conjunction with an airshow featuring the Navy's flight demonstration squadron, the Blue Angels.

Serving in the Navy has made Kunz a better overall person both professionally and personally.

"I joined because the opportunities that were available for me at the time before I decided to enlist, would not have supported my family or myself for that matter," she said. "The pride that I feel knowing that I am serving my country and protecting my loved ones is unmatched."

Navy Talent Acquisition Groups is a recent change name of recruiting districts the Navy is using as part of a strategy to attract top talent from the nation’s talent pool. Navy Talent Group Acquisition Group Minneapolis recruits in six states: North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin. They promote awareness and hire the highest quality candidates from America’s diverse talent pool to assure Navy mission success.
