ARABIAN GULF – Navy Electronics Technician 3rd Class Cullan McCormick, a Catholic Central High School graduate and Grand Rapids, Michigan, native, was awarded Sailor of the Week for the week of Feb. 10, serving aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Stockdale (DDG 106).
As an electronics technician, McCormick maintains and repairs electronic equipment such as radar, communication and navigation equipment.
“I work on different communications gear and different radars, depending on what is needed,” McCormick said.
The work McCormick does on a daily basis supports the ship’s readiness for combat operations.
“McCormick’s dedication and desire to accomplish the division’s maintenance is unmatched,” said Chief Fire Controlman (Aegis) Chianti Bryant, Combat Systems Electronics (CE) Division Leading Chief Petty Officer. “He is a vital member to the success of CE and the success of his peers.”
McCormick joined the Navy because he always wanted to join the military since he was young.
“My proudest accomplishment in the Navy has been being awarded Sailor of the Week,” McCormick said. “It is nice to know the work I am doing is being noticed.”
Stockdale is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer armed with long range missiles intended for air defense to counter threats to friendly forces posed by manned aircraft, anti-ship, cruise and ballistic missiles.
Destroyers are warships that provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities. They are 510 feet long and can be armed with tomahawk land-attack missiles, variants of the SM missile family, advanced gun systems and close-in gun systems. Destroyers are deployed globally and can operate independently, as part of carrier strike groups, surface action groups, or amphibious readiness groups.
Stockdale is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations to ensure maritime stability and security in the Central Region, connecting the Mediterranean and the Pacific through the western Indian Ocean and three strategic choke points.
