by Robin Holland, Training Support Center Hampton Roads Public Affairs Officer

NORFOLK, Va. - Navy Electronics Technician Seaman Heriberto Gomez, Jr., a Keansburg High School graduate and native of Keansburg, New Jersey, is currently enrolled in the Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) course at Center for Surface Combat Systems (CSCS) Detachment East Norfolk, Virginia.

The four-week course provides the technician with the knowledge and skills necessary to operate and perform documented preventive and corrective maintenance of readiness, in port and underway.

IFF is a radar-based identification system designed for command and control. It uses a transponder that listens for an interrogation signal and then sends a response consisting of a unique signal that identifies the broadcaster. It enables military and civilian air traffic control interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator.

Gomez attended Brookdale Community College before enlisting in the Navy in 2019. He is the son of Heriberto Gomez, Sr. and Anita Ortega, of Keansburg, New Jersey.
