Petty Officer 2nd Class Angel Gonzalez is recognized as ‘Sailor in the Spotlight’ while serving aboard USS Omaha, homeported in San Diego.
Gonzalez is a boatswain’s mate aboard Omaha.
"I enjoy the people aboard the Omaha," said Gonzalez. "My fellow boatswain's mates and other sailors aboard make this tour most enjoyable."
Gonzalez is a 2014 Timber Creek High School graduate and native of Sicklerville, New Jersey. According to Gonzalez, the values required to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Sicklerville.
"While in high school, I learned valuable lessons in leadership that have helped me become the sailor I am today," said Gonzalez.
Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community and career, Gonzalez is most proud of saving an anchor from paying out and allowing the ship to continue its mission.
"BM2 is one of the hardest charging second classes I have worked with," said Chief Petty Officer Darin Christensen. "He is one of my go to sailors for all things deck aboard Omaha."
As a member of the U.S. Navy, Gonzalez, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.
"I serve due to my devout patriotism,” said Gonzalez. "I was raised having great patriotism for the country and enjoy providing for the country every day."
