Tuscaloosa Native Assumes Command of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – Capt. Michael L. Witherspoon, a Tuscaloosa, Alabama native, became the sixth Commander of Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story (JEBLCFS), June 25. 

“I am very honored for the opportunity to lead Joint Base Little-Creek Fort Story,” he said. “Our goal is to continue and maintain the culture of excellence that has been demonstrated to date. We will have a complete devotion to mission in serving the waterfront, and a selfless devotion to our Sailors and families.”

Witherspoon said there are two things that are extremely important to him that he asks of his team each day – positive attitude and effort. “If you maintain a steady strain on those two things on a daily basis, the success will follow,” he said.

Witherspoon received his commissioning in 1995 through the Officer Candidate School in Pensacola, Florida as part of the first Seaman-to-Admiral Program. He earned his Bachelors of Science degree in Systems Engineering from Norfolk State University in Norfolk, Virginia and a Master’s Degree in National Security and Strategy from the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island.

His enlisted assignments include the USS McKee (AS 41) and Navy Recruiting District St. Louis.

His officer and at sea assignments include Electronic Warfare Officer aboard USS Kidd (DDG 993); Auxiliaries and Electrical Officer on USS Merrimack (AO 179); Main Propulsion Assistant on USS Vella Gulf (CG 72); Chief Engineer on USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44); Operations Officer for Commander, Amphibious Squadron TWO; Materials Officer and Chief Engineer on USS Oak Hill (LSD 51); Executive Officer in Pre-commissioning Detachment and commissioned USS Gravely (DDG 107); Executive Officer tours in and merger of Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron FOUR, Coastal Riverine Squadron FOUR (CRS 4) Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadron TWO (MSRON 2), Coastal Riverine Squadron TWO (CRS 2) and ultimately Commanding Officer of Coastal Riverine Squadron TWO (CRS 2).

Witherspoon deployed in support of numerous wartime and contingency operation, including Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operation Noble Anvil, and Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom.

Ashore assignments include Operational Test Director at Commander, Operational Test and Evaluations Force, Officer-in-Charge of Coastal Riverine Group TWO Training and Evaluation Unit, and Future Plans at Military Sealift Command in Norfolk, Virginia.

His personal awards include the Navy Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards.

Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story provides outstanding support and services to ensure maximum military readiness of operational forces and resident commands. In doing so, the installation enhances the quality of life for Sailors, Soldiers, Marines and their families.
