Stafford Resident and Contract Specialist in the Spotlight- Maria Caceres

From Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command Washington Public Affairs

Maria Caceres is a contracting officer for Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Washington, serving at Marine Corps Base (MCB) Quantico. Caceres’s father, William, served in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. She was born in Eglin AFB, Florida, and has lived abroad and in several U.S. states as a member of a military family.

“It was hard moving a lot, but I learned resilience,” Caceres said. “When starting at new schools and making new friends, I had to learn to think on my feet.”

Caceres began her career as a paralegal working in Santa Ana, Calif. while her husband was stationed at Camp Pendleton. Later, she attended Bellevue University in Nebraska and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business. In 2017, Caceres joined the contracting team at MCB Quantico and has been a valuable member of the team ever since.

Caceres credits her team as being tight knit like a family. She also credits Supervisory Contract Specialist Soledad Credo with being a great mentor who is a big believer in training. Caceres speaks fondly of the construction managers she works with.

“My [construction managers] are the best. They’ve been a big part of getting me to where I am today.”

In addition to service and pre-award contracts, Caceres is in charge of a variety of construction contracts, from the DEA Clandestine Lab 2nd floor buildout, to the P65 Ammunition Supply Point expansion, to Fuller Road improvements.

“When I first started I didn’t know anything about construction contracts, but I love construction. It’s challenging doing the comparison work and the proposals, but I enjoy helping the customers get their needs met.”

Caceres strengths flow through her ability to solve problems and her devotion to customer service.

“I’m proud of my ability to learn and I am driven to help. If you can’t help, you can find someone who can help. Just listen to you customers and pay it forward.”

Caceres is the proud mother of two children, Christopher and Melissa, and an even prouder grandmother to a 7-year-old grandson. She has been married to her husband, Tommy, a retired marine gunnery sergeant, since 2002 and currently resides in Stafford, Va.
