Jacksonville native serves aboard USS Carl Vinson

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – A native of Jacksonville, Florida, is serving aboard USS Carl Vinson, a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier.

Petty Officer 1st Class Cierra Browne is a 2015 Duncan U. Fletcher High School graduate. Today, Browne serves as a Navy air traffic controller responsible for
safely and effectively directing aircraft on board ships.

Browne joined the Navy thirteen years ago to finish her college education.

According to Browne, the values required to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Jacksonville.

"My hometown taught me how to adapt to diverse environment and how to be outside of my comfort zone," said Browne. "I've learned that there's no such thing as 'no,' but there's always a way to 'yes.'"

Homeported in San Diego, California, USS Carl Vinson is named in honor of Georgia Congressman Carl Vinson. Vinson was the first to serve a 50-year term and earned the nickname “The Father of the Two Ocean Navy" based on his push to increase funding for naval power. This paved the way for expanding the United States Navy.

According to Navy officials, aircraft carriers support and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on airborne, afloat and ashore targets that threaten free use of the sea and engage in sustained power projection operations in support of U.S. and coalition forces.

Though there are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers, Browne is most proud of representing her department as Senior Sailor of the Quarter (SSOQ). SSOQ is awarded to a senior sailor who exemplifies outstanding dedication to duty and superior performance by going above and beyond their assigned job.

"My favorite accomplishment was earning my MTS, Master Training Specialist, qualification while on instructor duty," said Browne.

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Browne, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

"I love mentoring sailors," added Browne. "Serving in the Navy means that everyday is a part of history."
