MILLINGTON, Tenn. – A Miami, Florida, native was promoted to captain at Naval Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Center (SMWDC), Sept. 1.
Capt. Jose Roman joined the Navy 31 years ago. Today, Roman serves as the head of corporate operations at SMWDC.
“I am in charge of the command’s budget, manpower and infrastructure programs,” said Roman.
Roman has learned a number of lessons while serving in the Navy.
“I have learned that great ideas come from all walks of life,” said Roman.
SMWDC is headquartered in San Diego and has four Divisions – two located in California and two in Virginia – focused on increasing the lethality and tactical proficiency of the surface force across all domains, and the development of warfare tactics instructors in four surface warfare areas: anti-submarine warfare/surface warfare, integrated air and missile defense, mine warfare and amphibious warfare.
Roman believes the same lessons and skills developed in Miami contribute to a successful naval career.
“Growing up, I was taught to never give up and to create my own path,” said Roman.
Though there are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers, Roman is most proud of helping others succeed.
“My proudest naval accomplishment is having the chance to lead sailors and take command at sea,” said Roman. “My proudest personal accomplishment has been watching my children graduate college.”
As a member of the U.S. Navy, Roman, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.
“Serving in the Navy means doing the hard things that not every American would do,” added Roman. “It means serving our country, while sacrificing for our families, for the greater good. I always appreciate those sacrifices our families experience while we are deployed.”
