MILLINGTON, Tenn. – A native of Spokane, Washington, serving the U.S. Navy aboard USS Makin Island was recently promoted to master chief petty officer.

Master Chief Petty Officer Matthew Morgan joined the Navy more than 18 years ago.

“I joined the Navy to make a difference in the world and to do be part of something bigger then myself,” said Morgan.

Today, Morgan serves as a logistics specialist.

“The thing I like best about USS Makin Island is that it's a family type environment,” said Morgan. “We all know each other and help each other out to be successful on a personal and professional level.”

Growing up in Spokane, Morgan attended graduated North Central High School in 2000 and earned an Associate of Arts degree from Spokane Falls Community College in 2007. Morgan uses the skills developed through past experiences in Lawton and those learned while serving to succeed in the military.

“Serving in the Navy has taught me a lot about teamwork and truly understanding just how diverse our Country is,” said Morgan. “It has taught me that diversity is a strength, not a weakness, but everyone needs to try daily to really understand all points of views on a situation and on how to best get the job done.”

Serving in the Navy means Morgan is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

There are many opportunities for sailors, such as Morgan, to earn recognition in their command, community and careers while serving in the Navy.

“The accomplishment I am most proud of is seeing my sailors advance,” said Morgan. “Inspection scores and my achievements mean nothing if my sailors don't succeed.”

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Morgan, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

“Serving in the Navy to me means representing the best Country in the world," added Morgan. “It's an honor to have an opportunity to serve and to follow in my families’ footsteps of service in the military.”
