MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Petty Officer 2nd Class Chansaravy Sor, a Tacoma, Washington, native recently reenlisted into America's Navy.

Sor joined the Navy seven years ago.

“I joined the Navy to start anew and to choose a different path in life,” said Sor.

Today, Sor serves as a personnel specialist at Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Philadelphia.

“My favorite part about being a personnel specialist is getting to meet sailors from different backgrounds and getting to know their story on how and why they joined the Navy,” said Sor.

Growing up in Tacoma, Sor attended Lincoln High School and graduated in 2013. Today, Sor relies upon skills and values similar to those found in Tacoma to succeed in the military.

“Growing up in my hometown, I learned of the acronym ‘PRIDE’,” said Sor. “It stands for Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline and Empathy. Each word has played a key role in my life ever since childhood and, to this day, that is essentially my moral code.”

Sor uses that lesson to succeed while serving in the Navy.

NTAG Philadelphia encompasses regions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and West Virginia, providing recruiting services from more than 30 talent acquisition sites with the overall goal of attracting the highest quality candidates to ensure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.

Serving in the Navy means Sor is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.

“The Navy contributes to national defense through unity and commitment,” said Sor. “We are a team created from years of tradition that includes sailors from all cultures and backgrounds who come together to complete any task.”

With more than 90 percent of all trade traveling by sea, and 95 percent of the world’s international phone and internet traffic carried through underwater fiber optic, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity and security of the United States is directly linked to a strong and ready Navy.

There are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers.

“I am most proud of being able to talk to and help every sailor that I meet in order to make their lives better, even if it is just a little bit,” said Sor.

As a member of the U.S. Navy, Sor, as well as other sailors, know they are part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.

“Serving in the Navy means the world to me,” added Sor. “The Navy has given me an opportunity to create a new path in life and to test my limits on what I can accomplish.”
