MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Petty Officer 2nd Class Taylor Hughes, a native of Yuba City, California, received a certificate for exemplary service from the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce during an awards ceremony held in Norfolk, Virginia, on July 26.
As the Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic (CNRMA) Administrative Department Leading Petty Officer, Hughes was recognized for dedicating countless hours to reviewing and processing awards, correspondence, and personnel requests. Also, as the Directives Manager, her in-depth knowledge was instrumental in the creation, tracking, and routing of all command instructions and notices. Hughes' efforts resulted in ensuring command policies and procedures were made readily available to CNRMA personnel across 14 installations.
"To be recognized not only by my chain of command but by the city of Norfolk, is the greatest honor I have ever been given," said Hughes. "It makes me proud to call myself a sailor, and it gives me a new sense of belonging. I hold my head a little higher and hope that I am setting a positive example for my junior sailors."
The Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce, primarily a business organization, aims to augment the local community by enhancing the quality of life and economic prosperity. Because of the volume of military personnel in the region, the organization fully supports its men and women in uniform and hosts military appreciation events each year.
Hughes, a 2018 graduate of River Valley High School, joined the Navy four years ago. Today, Hughes serves as a yeoman with CNRMA responsible for performing clerical and personnel security and general administrative duties.
CNRMA is the regional coordinator for all shore-based naval personnel and shore activities in the Mid-Atlantic region, which encompasses 20 states, 14 installations and 50 Naval Operational Support Centers.
As the naval shore installation management headquarters, CNRMA provides coordination of base operating support functions for operating forces throughout the region in support of the fleet, fighter and family.
As Hughes and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the United States Navy.
Later this year, Hughes will compete for the Samuel T. Northern Military Citizen of the Year award held by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce. The Samuel T. Northern Award has been given annually to recognize the military citizen who has made the most significant contribution in the area of community service. The award is not for a single act, but rather for sustained community service in the Hampton Roads area for a period of at least one year.
Hughes' parents, Dennis and Heidi Hughes, both reside in Yuba City, California.
