MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Ensign Nicholas Dreybus, a native of Poquoson, Virginia, graduated from the U.S. Navy’s Officer Development School (ODS) on March 29.

Dreybus, a 2011 graduate of Poquoson High School, joined the Navy nearly two years ago. Additionally, Dreybus earned a degree in civil engineering from Virginia Military Institute in 2015.

“I joined the Navy because I wanted to do something bigger than myself and seized the opportunity to apply my skills in engineering by earning a commission in the CEC Reserves,” said Dreybus.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Poquoson.

“From the small-town feel of Poquoson, I learned humility and to be kind to my neighbor,” said Dreybus. “This goes a long way in leadership and getting the most out of your sailors. If you treat everyone with respect, they will return that respect to you.”

ODS is one of four officer accession programs operating at Officer Training Command Newport, Rhode Island. This is the final step in a sailor’s transition into the Naval Officer Corps. This course is comprehensive, intense and designed to reinforce understanding of the responsibilities of a naval officer.

Dreybus will serve as a Civil Engineer Corps officer at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek, Virginia.

“Graduating ODS is the first major milestone in my naval career,” said Dreybus. “I am now equipped with all the tools I need to be an effective naval leader and will spend my career learning and perfecting these tools.”

Dreybus has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am most proud of completing training as I now look ahead to advancing my Naval career,” said Dreybus.

Dreybus serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.

“Serving in the Navy means just that – serving my country, devoting myself, my time, to my sailors and to the overall mission,” said Dreybus.
