MILLINGTON, Tenn. - A native of York, Pennsylvania, recently received the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) insignia serving aboard the U.S. Navy warship, USS Russell, operating out of San Diego, California.
Petty Officer 2nd Class Jordan Gambrell, left, receives a certificate for earning
the ESWS insignia from Cmdr. Michael J. McInerney, commanding officer of
USS Russell (DDG 59).

The ESWS insignia signifies that a sailor has achieved the highest level of expertise in surface ships and in surface warfare.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jordan Gambrell, a 2019 graduate of York County School of Technology, joined the Navy three years ago.

"I was awarded the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist pin for becoming a subject matter expert in surface warfare and the functionality of my ship," said Gambrell.

Today, Gambrell serves as a cryptologic technician responsible for performing a variety of specialized duties associated with the collection and processing of airborne, shipborne and land-based radar signals.

"Becoming an Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist means all the hard work and countless hours I put in, were meaningful and noticed," added Gambrell. "I believe that what you put in is what you get out, and this really showed when I received this award."

Two ships of the United States Navy have borne the name USS Russell. The first was named in honor of Rear Adm. John Henry Russell who served during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War and the second was named in honor of his son, Maj. Gen. John Henry Russell, Jr., the 16th Commandant of the Marine Corps.

According to Navy officials, Russell is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer that provides a wide range of warfighting capabilities. A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.

As Gambrell and other sailors continue to train and perform missions, they take pride in serving their country in the U.S. Navy.
