EVERETT, Wash. - Army National Guard Spc. Adrianna Mears, a native of Newport News, Virginia, currently lives in the Pacific Northwest, where her husband, Jonathan Mears, serves with the U.S. Navy at Naval Station Everett.

Mears graduated from Heritage High School in 2018.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the military are similar to those found in Newport News.

“Growing up in Newport News, I learned how to connect with people from all backgrounds,” said Mears.

Mears joined the Army National Guard six years ago.

“I joined the Guard because I wanted to help my community,” said Mears.

The Mearses have been married for five years.

“We met when I was working at a local phone store,” said Mears. “He left his charger at the store, so I texted him to let him know that he could come back and get it. When he came back, I asked him if he wanted to go out for dinner.”

Dual-military couples have many challenges; however, there are also some advantages.

“Being married to a sailor is beneficial because it’s helpful to have someone who understands the challenges of military service,” said Mears. “Being an Army medic, I get pulled more often to assist, rather than just the one weekend a month or two weeks a year. It’s nice knowing that he understands.”

Mears can take pride in serving America through military service.

“Serving in the Army National Guard means that I can provide front-line care and protection to my community and country,” said Mears. “Serving as a military spouse means that I can support his military career and be the sole provider for our kids while he’s gone. We have two kids who are 2 and 3 years old.”

Mears is grateful to Jonathan for helping make a military career possible.

“My husband has always supported me and encouraged any military-related opportunities that come my way,” added Mears.
