SEATTLE - Petty Officer 3rd Class John James II, a University of Houston graduate, serves aboard USS Barry, a U.S. Navy warship homeported at Naval Station Everett, Washington. The ship is currently in a Seattle shipyard undergoing routine maintenance.
James, a native of Katy, Texas, earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Houston in 2021.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Houston.
“Growing up, I lived right near the city of Houston, which offered me the unique opportunity to meet people from all over the world,” said James. “I’ve assigned a lot of value to diversity. It’s the same thing in the Navy because we serve with people from all over the place and from a million different backgrounds and you have to appreciate the differences. The most fascinating aspect of being in the Navy so far has been meeting all the people. That’s why I like traveling so much. I get to see different cultures and different ways of living.”
James joined the Navy two years ago. Today, James serves as a fire controlman (AEGIS).
“I’ve had several family members and friends join the military,” said James. “I wanted to do my part, for them and the nation. I also wanted to travel and see the world.”
A Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and a phalanx close-in weapons system.
More than 300 sailors serve aboard Barry. Their jobs are highly specialized, requiring both dedication and skill. The jobs range from maintaining engines to handling weaponry along with a multitude of other assignments that keep the ship mission-ready at all times, according to Navy officials.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
James has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I am proud of excelling during ‘A’ School training and receiving an academic award for my hard work,” said James. “That recognition confirmed that I was working hard.”
James serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
“Serving in the Navy allows me to make a direct and meaningful impact toward the betterment of the nation,” said James.
James is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.“I want to thank my mother and siblings for their continuous support and enthusiasm for my service,” added James.
