West Covina native serves in Navy Medicine

By Alvin Plexico, Navy Office of Community Outreach

SAN DIEGO - Petty Officer 1st Class Horacio Aguirre, a native of West Covina, California, serves in the U.S. Navy with Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego, California.

Aguirre graduated from West Covina High School in 2010.

Aguirre joined the Navy 11 years ago. Today, Aguirre serves as a legalman.

“I joined the Navy to give my life direction and to continue the military tradition within my family,” said Aguirre. "I also wanted to pursue educational benefits by utilizing the paralegal training program that the Navy Judge Advocate General Corps offers. The Navy uniquely offers an associate degree through the legalman rating and I thought that would be a tremendous opportunity for me. It has paid off so far."

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in West Covina.

“Growing up I learned in my hometown that whether it was sports or academics, we could work together as a team to accomplish our goals and mission,” said Aguirre. "In West Covina, we don’t give up and instead look for additional challenges."

According to Navy officials, NMRTC’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high-quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMRTC serves as the single point of contact in support of installation and operational commanders, providing medical information, support and over medical cognizance of the active duty and reserve force.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Aguirre serves a Navy that operates forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Aguirre has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I’m most proud of being a plank owner onboard the aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford,” said Aguirre. "It was a unique ship because I was afforded the opportunity to be one of the first legalman and sailors on board and helped establish a first-in-class aircraft carrier."

Aguirre can take pride in serving America through military service.

“Being in the Navy means that I can serve the needs of the American people,” said Aguirre. "The U.S. Navy provides security for the world’s primary route of travel and spreads American values such as democracy and freedom throughout the world. Whether it’s through warfare or diplomacy, I believe that service in the Navy allows the furthest reach for helping communities worldwide."

Aguirre is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank my father, Horacio Aguirre Sr., because his military service in the United States Marine Corps and time as a police officer in the Los Angeles Police Department, inspired me to join the Navy and to pursue the legal profession,” added Aguirre.
