Johnson graduated from the University of Chicago Woodlawn campus in 2019.

Johnson joined the Navy one year ago. Today, Johnson serves as a yeoman.

“I joined the Navy to better my circumstances,” said Johnson. "I also joined to be able to tell myself that I can achieve something and to be able to finish strong and not give up on myself in the process."

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Chicago.

“Lessons I learned from my hometown is being respectful and staying true to myself,” said Johnson. "I always remind myself never to give up and remember that no matter how tough it gets, I can do this."

According to Navy officials, members of HSM-35 The Magicians fly and maintain the MH-60R Sea Hawk helicopter, the Navy’s most advanced rotary wing maritime strike platform. The Navy MH-60R is able to perform many different missions. Some of the most common operations include strikes on maritime targets, submarine hunting and attack, electronic warfare, search and rescue, medical evacuations and supply support.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Johnson serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Johnson has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“My proudest accomplishment in the Navy is finishing ascension school and being able to pass all of my tests,” said Johnson. "I am also proud of completing boot camp, which is a very stressful environment."

Johnson can take pride in serving America through military service.

“Serving in the Navy means that I am not only doing better for myself but for other sailors and my country,” said Johnson. "Being able to make some type of difference regardless of the job, I know that I still matter while showing everyone that they matter too."

Johnson is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.

“I would like to thank my mom Nicole Lias, and my dad Jamal,” added Johnson. "They have had my back from the start, supporting my decision to join. They have been nothing but the utmost help for my mental state and also keeping me positive day in and day out."

“My goal is to learn the most I can about my job so that once I am no longer in the Navy, I can make the most of my business goals,” said Johnson. "I hope to earn my bachelor's degree in business administration to work with real estate."
