Hospital Corpsman in Sicily Helps Tanker in Trouble

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Sebastian Portieleslopez

NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Sicily - A Navy hospital corpsman assigned to U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella, Sicily, recently rendered aid to a local driver whose fuel tanker flipped and caused a massive leak on SS192, near Naval Air Station (NAS) Sigonella, Sept. 24.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael Bailey, a native of Phenix City, Alabama, was one of three sailors who immediately rushed to the driver, helped him out of the tanker cab and rendered first aid.

Bailey, a 2009 graduate of Smiths Station High School, joined the Navy seven years ago.

“Amidst the chaos of the crash, our sailors stood as beacons of hope, embodying courage and compassion in every act of aid,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Steven Taylor, leading chief petty officer, of NAS 2 Flight Line Clinic.

Bailey provided assistance after a fuel tanker lost control and flipped over and began leaking fuel onto the road and surrounding area. They aided in extricating the local national driver out of the cab of the tanker truck, contacted emergency services and made sure no one went near the area in case of fire or explosion.

After rendering first aid, all three hospital corpsmen contacted emergency services and kept the area cordoned off until first responders could arrive and secure the leak.

“We all just did what we were trained for, to help someone in need,” said Bailey.

The sailors, who work at the NAS 2 Flight Line Clinic, were recognized for their swift, life-saving actions, personally thanked and presented with a command coin by Captain TaRail Vernon, commanding officer of U.S. Naval Hospital Sigonella.
