GULFPORT, Miss. - U.S. Navy sailors keep a weather eye on everything from the depths of the world’s oceans to the far reaches of the atmosphere. Training for those responsible for ensuring the Navy can operate and dominate in those domains begins at Information Warfare Training Group (IWTG) Gulfport, located at Naval Construction Battalion Center (NCBC) Gulfport, Mississippi.
Ensign Alyssa Singer is a native of Oxford, Massachusetts.
Singer graduated from Oxford High School in 2019.
Singer joined the Navy less than one year ago.
“My father and grandfathers served in the Air Force and Navy," said Singer. "I joined the Navy to become a commissioned officer and be a part of something bigger than anything I've ever been a part of."
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Oxford.
“Growing up, I was involved with several different teams that have taught me teamwork, patience and the importance of support,” said Singer. "These have been a foundation in my leadership growth throughout my time in the Navy so far."
Singer is currently stationed at IWTG Gulfport serving as a student.
IWTG Gulfport , along with its sister ITWGs in Norfolk and San Diego (IWTG-N/SD), is an echelon V command within the Naval Information Forces (NAVIFOR) training system, and Commander, Naval Information Warfare Training Group (NIWTG) serves as the main training agent of NAVIFOR for information warfare training and assessment, according to Navy officials.
The four major courses offered at IWTG Gulfport are focused on meteorology, oceanography and hydrography.
As such, the training group in Gulfport also plays a pivotal role in providing the fleet with the highest quality sailors trained in the fields of cyber, electronic warfare, cryptology, intelligence, and meteorology and oceanography to support the Navy’s forward-deployed naval forces and its efforts to streamline maintenance and deployment cycles.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Singer serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
Singer has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I am most proud of my commissioning to become an officer,” said Singer. "It’s something that was difficult to do personally while juggling school, all the while learning to become an officer."
Singer can take pride in serving America through military service.
“Serving in the Navy gives me a chance to enhance my mental and physical abilities while serving my country and protecting the ones I love,” said Singer.
Singer is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I want to thank my family for their support and enthusiasm throughout my journey so far,” said Singer. "I also want to thank my mentor, Master Chief David Youngsman, for pushing me to be the best I could be and providing me guidance for the last nine years.”
“I graduated from the University of Maine in 2024 with a bachelor's degree in ecology and environmental sciences,” added Singer.
