GULFPORT, Miss. - Since 1942, sailors assigned to the U.S. Navy’s Construction Force have been building and fighting around the world. Petty Officer 3rd Class Jose Jordan, a Richmond, Virginia, native is one of those sailors.
Eighty-two years ago, members of Navy Construction Battalions were fittingly nicknamed, “Seabees,” a play on the C and B initials. They are responsible for building military bases and airfields, supporting humanitarian efforts and conducting underwater construction projects. The Seabees’ motto is “We Build, We Fight.”
Jordan is a builder currently serving with Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 11 at the headquarters for naval construction forces in Gulfport, Mississippi, which serves as a home base for the Atlantic Fleet Seabees. Jordan previously served with Naval Construction Training Center Gulfport.
Jordan, who graduated from Varina High School in 2016, joined the Navy three years ago.
“I joined the Navy for numerous reasons but to give you one, I joined the Navy for my family and to show them a better way,” said Jordan. “Today, my reasons for staying in the Navy continue to grow.”
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Richmond.
“Growing up, I learned an ‘L’ doesn’t mean a loss,” said Jordan. “It means your mind is telling you to stop, but your body can continue on whatever it is you’re doing. You need to have a strong mindset to make a strong body.”
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Jordan serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation’s prosperity and security.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
Jordan has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“My proudest moment is passing Seabee ‘A’ school,” said Jordan. “I proved to myself that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.”
Jordan can take pride in serving America through military service.
“Serving in the Navy means having stability and security,” said Jordan. “It means not having to worry about where my next meal is coming from or having a roof over my head. It also means that my family is well taken care of.”
Jordan is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I would like to thank my family for always believing in me and putting a weight on my shoulders to be successful until eventually the weight was no longer, and my success started to shine; even the small ones,” said Jordan.
