MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 2nd Class Roderick Davis, Jr., a native of Shreveport, Louisiana, is recognized as Sailor in the Spotlight serving at U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Sigonella, Italy.

Davis, a 2010 graduate of Caddo Parish Magnet High School, joined the Navy 13 years ago. Additionally, Davis is a 2023 graduate of National University. He plans to enroll in the Doctorate of Healthcare Administration program in the Fall of 2025.

"I joined the Navy because my parents are both Navy veterans and I wanted to follow in their footsteps," said Davis.

Today, Davis serves as a hospital corpsman in the anesthesia department responsible for assisting healthcare professionals in providing medical care to Navy personnel and their families.

"First, I assist anesthesia providers with cases in the operating room," said Davis. "Then, I tend to my job-specific duties, which include providing respiratory care to premature infants with underdeveloped lungs and beneficiaries with lung disease."

Davis is also the Command Infection Prevention and Control Petty Officer, Command Legal Clerk, Command Citizenship Representative, Assistant Command Urinalysis Program Coordinator and Neonatal Resuscitation Program Instructor.

"These collateral duties bring me out of my comfort zone and allow me to develop and hone a range of abilities," said Davis.

According to Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Siobhann Houston, Davis' department leading petty officer, Davis takes initiative and is very reliable.

"His initiative and overall performance set him apart from his peers," said Houston. "He has proven to be a devoted leader in all aspects of the command’s mission and beyond. Demonstrating a lead-by-example work ethic, utmost professionalism and a “mission before self” attitude for those in his charge."

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Davis serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of naval operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

According to Navy officials, NMRTC’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high-quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMRTC serves as the single point of contact in support of installation and operational commanders, providing medical information, support and over-medical cognizance of the active duty and reserve force.

Davis has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

"My proudest accomplishment is when I was awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal in 2019 for volunteering over 300 hours to various community organizations while stationed at USNMRTC Pensacola," said Davis. "This award shows dedication and a sense of selflessness by putting the needs of others above my own."

Davis can take pride in serving America through military service.

"Serving in the Navy means being selfless and doing things for the greater good," added Davis.

Davis' previous commands include Naval Aviation Warfare Development Command Fallon; Strike Fighter Squadron 81; Strike Fighter Squadron 106; NMRTC Pensacola and NMRTC Guam.

His favorite hobbies are swimming, traveling, volunteering and playing tennis.
