Millington, Tenn. - Petty Officer 1st Class Brittany Sloan, a native of Chicago, Illinois, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Navy Medical Readiness Logistics Command Detachment Atlantic.

Sloan graduated from Segun High School in 2010.

The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Chicago.

“I didn't find out that my grandfather was in the Navy in Vietnam until last year,” said Sloan. "My grandma had always told me that he was in the Army and last year, he showed me his uniform. He was a Signalman 2nd Class. I was at a crossroads in my career and I think hearing my granddad tell me what he went through made me want to fight harder to achieve the things that he wasn't able to do because of the color of his skin."

Sloan joined the Navy 12 years ago. Today, Sloan serves as a yeoman.

“Funny story, when I was seven, my best friend's dad Senior Chief Quartermaster (Ret.) Kevin Clark, now in Jacksonville, Florida, was coming home and I saw him in his uniform and thought that he looked really professional and cool” said Sloan. "I asked him what he did, and I like the main character in a movie, he stooped down and said, "I'm in the Navy." I decided then that I wanted to be in the Navy because the way he represented them in his uniform was very motivating and inspirational."

Headed by Capt. Christopher Barnes, NMRLC develops, acquires, produces, fields, sustains, and provides enduring lifecycle support of medical materiel solutions to the Fleet, Fleet Marine Force, and Joint Forces in high-end competition, crisis, and combat. At the forefront of Navy Medicine’s strategic evolution, NMRLC is well positioned to be the Joint Force’s premier integrated medical logistics support activity.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Sloan serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.

“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”

Sloan has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.

“I am the most proud of the impact that I have made on junior sailors that I have led,” said Sloan. "I love that two to three commands down the road, sailors who advance still come to me, thanking me for my leadership and guidance. I am also proud of being the leader that I have always wanted to have."

Sloan can take pride in serving America through military service.

“Serving in the Navy means that I can be part of something bigger than myself," added Sloan. "I get to do something that I love without struggling with the possibility that I won't have a job tomorrow."
