MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Seaman Apprentice Damelah Fluker, a native of Chicago, Illinois, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to the U.S. Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Fluker graduated from Hill Crest High School in 2023.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Chicago.
“My experience growing up taught you the importance of self-advocacy and pride in my work, which has translated into my military service,” said Fluker. "By approaching every task with the mindset that my name is on it, I ensure that my efforts reflect my values and commitment to excellence. This level of dedication likely sets me apart in any environment, and especially in the Navy, where attention to detail and reliability are crucial."
Fluker joined the Navy one year ago. Today, Fluker serves as a logistics specialist.
“I joined the Navy with a clear sense of purpose—not only for personal growth and adventure but also to set a positive example for my siblings,” said Fluker. "By taking a different path than traditional college, I am showing them that there are multiple avenues to success and that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to valuable experiences."
Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay provides health care to the U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay community, which consists of approximately 4,500 military members, federal employees, U.S. and foreign national contractors and their families. The hospital also operates the only overseas military home health care facility providing care to elderly special category residents who sought asylum on the installation during the Cuban Revolution.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
Fluker serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.
“We will earn and reinforce the trust and confidence of the American people every day,” said Admiral Lisa Franchetti, Chief of Naval Operations. “Together we will deliver the Navy the nation needs.”
Fluker has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“Raising $24,515 for the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society is a significant achievement, and receiving a certificate of appreciation for your efforts is something I am proud of,” said Fluker.
Fluker can take pride in serving America through military service.
“Serving in the Navy offers me the opportunity to develop skills, gain discipline, and challenge myself, all while being part of something larger than myself,” said Fluker. "Protecting the people I love and contributing to the safety and well-being of my country is a powerful motivator."
Fluker is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I want to thank my grandma and my younger siblings; their unconditional love and encouragement have been a foundation for my journey,” added Fluker.
