Tabor City native serves with Navy Medicine in Mayport

By Lt. j.g. Taylor Worley, Navy Office of Community Outreach

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 2nd Class Colyn Fowler, a native of Tabor City, North Carolina, was recently selected as Sailor of the Quarter for the fourth quarter of 2025 while serving with Navy Medicine in Mayport, Florida.

Sailor of the Quarter is an award given to an enlisted sailor who recognizes someone who demonstrates sustained superior performance, leadership and professionalism.

Fowler, a 2017 graduate of South Columbus High School, joined the Navy seven years ago and now serves as a hospital corpsman.

Fowler joined the Navy to follow in his father’s footsteps.

“My father was in the Army, so I wanted to serve my country and follow in those footsteps, while challenging myself,” Fowler said. “I always felt a calling to serve from a young age.”

Fowler loves being able to help sailors with the care they need.

“As a corpsman, I love being someone other sailors can rely on by providing care to patients,” Fowler said.

NMRTC Mayport’s mission is to maximize warfighter performance through optimized medical readiness, enhance the readiness of the medical force for expeditionary support, and to train and develop the Navy Medicine team, ensuring they are prepared to generate and sustain critical medical capabilities for global operations.

The U.S. Navy is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.

According to Navy officials, “America is a maritime nation and for 250 years, America’s Warfighting Navy has sailed the globe in defense of freedom.”

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

For Fowler, his service represents more than meets the eye.

“Serving in the Navy means everything to me,” Fowler said. “Putting on this uniform every day gives me a sense of purpose. It allows me to become a better person as well as lead others to become the best versions of themselves.”
