MILLINGTON, Tenn. — Petty Officer 2nd Class Anthony Parreno, a native of Brooklyn, New York, recently received a Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM) while serving at Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Norfolk, Site New London in Connecticut.

The MOVSM is awarded to service members who perform outstanding volunteer community service of a sustained, direct and consequential nature.

Parreno has served in the military for seven years. Today, Parreno serves as a logistics specialist.

"Receiving the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal recognizes a side of my military journey that goes entirely beyond the daily grind of my regular duties," Parreno said. "While my other commendations honor achievements and job performance, the MOVSM symbolizes my personal commitment to being a good neighbor and giving back to the community that supports us. I have always believed that true leadership doesn't punch out at the end of the duty day, and dedicating my free time to volunteering allowed me to break out of the military bubble and build meaningful civilian connections. Earning this ribbon required long-term dedication."

Parreno received the MOVSM for serving as the active duty instructor for the Empire State Division of Sea Cadets, the unit he served in as a teenager. In this role, Parreno directly supported the mission readiness and success of 20 cadets and six volunteer adults by planning and executing unit operations, training schedules and logistics. Additionally, Parreno conducted military training, led physical fitness sessions and managed administrative documentation to maintain compliance with national standards. Parreno also trained cadets from entry-level movements through advanced drill proficiency and oversaw the Color Guard program.

With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.

Parreno serves a Navy that operates far forward, around the world and around the clock, promoting the nation's prosperity and security.
