SAN DIEGO - Petty Officer 2nd Class David Evan, a native of Newport News, Virginia, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 8, at Naval Air Station North Island, California.
Evan graduated from Woodside High School in 2007.
The skills and values needed to succeed in the Navy are similar to those found in Newport News.
“Working on an Army base and deploying as a civilian has shown me the importance of showing up on time and having a strong work ethic,” Evan said.
Evan joined the Navy five years ago. Today, Evan serves as an aviation structural mechanic.
“I took a year off of school and had a full-time job, but my mom was struggling on her own after my father, who was prior Navy, passed away,” Evan said. “I decided to work two jobs to help provide, but realized that wasn't enough for me, and I needed more stability for me, my family and my future, so I decided to join.”
The “Eightballers” of HSC-8 fly and maintain the MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter, the Navy’s versatile and most advanced rotary wing maritime platform. Their missions include airborne mine countermeasures, combat search and rescue, anti-surface warfare, combat logistics and medevac.
Evan has many opportunities to achieve accomplishments during military service.
“I’m proud of being promoted to second class petty officer and being fully qualified,” Evan said. “I’ve learned leadership skills, which enable me to help other sailors reach their full potential and help them succeed in their careers.”
This year, the Navy is commemorating its contribution to the nation’s defense as the United States celebrates 250 years of independence. According to Navy officials, for more than 250 years, the Navy has sailed the globe defending freedom and protecting prosperity.
With 90% of global commerce traveling by sea and access to the internet relying on the security of undersea fiber-optic cables, Navy officials continue to emphasize that the prosperity of the United States is directly linked to recruiting and retaining talented people from across the rich fabric of America.
“Serving in the Navy means discipline, structure and leadership,” Evan said.
Evan is grateful to others for helping make a Navy career possible.
“I’d like to recognize Chief Steven Almquis and Ensign Evan Santo,” Evan said. “Chief Almquis pushed us to be better sailors and prepared us for the fleet, while Ensign Santo was hands-on and a great mentor who always offered guidance. I’m very grateful to both of them.”
