WASHINGTON — Chief Musician Adrienne Welker, a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, retired from the United States Navy on May 7 after 26 years of service. A retirement ceremony was held in her honor at the Washington Navy Yard in Washington, D.C., where the United States Navy Band, the Navy’s premier musical organization, is headquartered.

Welker was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal for her years of selfless leadership and service. As a chief, Welker was among the less than 10% of enlisted sailors to earn the E-7 pay grade.

Welker earned a Bachelor of Music in music performance from Indiana University Bloomington and pursued graduate studies at Northwestern University.

After winning a national audition, Welker joined the Navy Band in 2000 as a saxophone instrumentalist in the concert and ceremonial bands. Following the completion of basic training, Welker reported to the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C.

As a member of the Navy Band, Welker participated in six presidential inaugurals, two International Military Tattoos in Oslo, Norway, and toured nationally with the band.
