(VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.)
- A Susquehannock High School graduate and
Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, native recently retired from the U.S. Navy after
24 years of loyal and dedicated service. The ceremony took place at Shifting
Sands on Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana Dam Neck Annex Virginia Beach,
Virginia.

Assignments at sea include tours as combat information center
officer aboard USS Reuben James (FFG 57); main propulsion assistant aboard USS
Port Royal (CG 73); weapon / combat systems officer aboard USS Philippine Sea
(CG 58); executive officer aboard USS Nicholas (FFG 47); and surface operations
officer on the staff of Battle Force U.S. 7th Fleet / Commander, Carrier Strike
Group 5.
Shore
assignments include junior officer detailer at Naval Personnel Command; Theatre
Air and Missile Defense officer and battle watch captain on the staff of
Commander, Second Fleet; student at the Naval War College; deputy assistant
chief of staff for operations and plans on the staff of Commander, Naval
Surface Force Atlantic; and most recently, executive officer at the Center for
Surface Combat Systems Unit Dam Neck.
Nielsen’s personal awards include the
Meritorious Service Medal (three awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation
Medal (six awards) and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards), as
well as various campaign and unit awards.
His wife,
Michelle, and two children, all reside in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
