NORFOLK, Va. – Information Systems Technician (Submarine) 1st Class Claude Brown, a Winnsboro, South Carolina, native, is currently serving in the U.S. Navy at Commander, Submarine Force Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia.

As a Navy information systems technician (submarine), Brown assists in information security of both hardware and software computer operations onboard submarines.

His favorite aspect of the job is the people he meets and has had the privilege to work with.

"It's allowed me to grow personally and professionally," Brown said.

Brown joined the Navy to gain stability and experience new and exciting things, which he certainly has done.

His proudest accomplishment is when he completed shore duty and returned to the sea after his third enlistment.

Brown’s hobbies include expanding his knowledge of electric cars, home improvement and building/repairing things.

He intends to continue his dedicated service until retirement and travel the world with his wife, saying he could not be happier with his life’s path.

“Every job has its ups and downs, the good and the bad," Brown said. "The Navy, while it can be hard work, I wouldn’t change this life choice because of what it has provided and given me and my family."

The fast-attack submarines in the Atlantic Fleet are flexible, multi-mission platforms designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operation forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and mine warfare. The Virginia-Class submarines are 377 feet long and 34 feet wide and weighs nearly 7,800 tons, powered by a nuclear reactor to push the boat through the water at speeds of more than 25 knots while submerged.

As the most modern and sophisticated attack submarines in the world, the submarines can operate in both littoral and deep ocean environments and presents combatant commanders with a broad and unique range of operational capabilities.
