MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Petty Officer 3rd Class Kyle Miess, a native of Indian Trail, North Carolina, is the Navy assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and is currently deployed with the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) and the Essex Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).
Miess joined the Navy four years ago for service to country.
“I joined the Navy to serve my country.,” said Miess
Today, Miess serves as a hospital corpsman.
“I am a paramedic with a focus on tactical medicine,” said Miess.
Growing up in Indian Trail, Miess attended and University of North Carolina Wilmington. Today, Miess uses the same skills and values learned in Indian Trail to succeed in the military.
“Growing up, I learned discipline,” said Miess. “Also, work ethic taught to me has served me well in the Navy”
The Essex ARG is comprised of three ships: USS Essex, amphibious transport dock USS Portland, and amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor.
The 11th MEU is comprised of Battalion Landing Team 1/1, Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 165 (Reinforced), Marine Attack Squadron 214, and Combat Logistics Battalion 11. Together, these elements—and supporting units—are trained, organized, and equipped to perform amphibious operations.
According to Navy officials, the 11th MEU’s mission is to provide a forward-deployed, flexible sea-based Marine Air-Ground Task Force. With the increasing concentration of the world’s population close to a coastline, amphibious forces provide the unique ability to operate simultaneously on the sea, ashore, and in the air.
Serving in the Navy means Miess is part of a team that is taking on new importance in America’s focus on rebuilding military readiness, strengthening alliances and reforming business practices in support of the National Defense Strategy.
While there are many opportunities for sailors to earn recognition in their command, community and careers, Miess is most proud deplyment.
“Being on this deployment is one of my best accomplishments,” said Miess.
As a member of the U.S. Navy, Miess, as well as other sailors, know they are a part of a service tradition providing unforgettable experiences through leadership development, world affairs and humanitarian assistance. Their efforts will have a lasting effect around the globe and for generations of sailors who will follow.
“The Navy to me, is just a job,” said Miess. “I'm thankful to be surrounded by good guys.”
