West Deptford Sailor Successfully Completes Tour as HSM 35 Commanding Officer

SAN DIEGO (May 23, 2018) — Cmdr. Joseph D. Murphy III, has served as commanding officer of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron THREE FIVE (HSM 35) in San Diego, Calif., for the past 15 months. He was relieved by Cmdr. Aric H. Edmondsonon, May 23, 2018, in a change of command ceremony on Naval Base Coronado.

Cmdr. Murphy is a native of West Deptford, New Jersey. He graduated with high honors from Rutgers University in May of 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering. In January of 1999, he graduated from Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. Additionally, in 2004 Cmdr. Murphy attended the Naval Post Graduate School’s distance learning program and earned a Master of Arts degree in Business Administration and in January of 2009, he was selected to attend the U.S. Army Command and Staff College, in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he earned his Joint Professional Military Education Phase I.

Since joining the Navy, Cmdr. Murphy has served at sea with the “Saberhawks” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light FOUR SEVEN (HSL 47) in North Island, Calif., where he deployed with Detachment THREE onboard USS Fife (DD 991) and with Detachment TWO as the maintenance officer on USS Shoup (DDG 86). Cmdr. Murphy also served as assistant air operations officer on USS Bataan (LHD 5), homeported in Naval Station Norfolk, Va. In 2010, Cmdr. Murphy reported to the “Easyriders” of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light THREE SEVEN (HSL 37) at Marine Corp Base Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he served as the officer in charge of Detachment FIVE onboard USS Port Royal (CG 73), where he deployed to the North Arabian Gulf in support of Operation New Dawn. Ashore, he has served as an operational test director for the MH-60R/S and the naval tactics techniques and procedures model manager for the HSL/HSM community at the “Pioneers” of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron ONE (VX 1) at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md. Cmdr. Murphy also served as the Joint Warfare Analysis Center’s (JWAC) liaison officer to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C. Prior to taking command, Cmdr. Murphy served as HSM 35’s executive officer. During his time as executive officer, four detachments successfully deployed.

HSM 35 is comprised of 263 and 12 aircraft. HSM 35’s mission is to provide expeditionary combat-ready MH-60R detachments for deployment onboard aviation capable ships as part of deployed naval forces.

Cmdr. Murphy's next assignment will be on the Chief of Naval Operations Staff as an executive assistant in the Integrated Warfare Directorate in Arlington, Va.
