Minerva Native Selected as Junior Sailor of the Year Aboard USS Columbus

Norfolk, Va. – A Minerva, Ohio native, Yeoman (Submarine) 2nd Class David Baxter, has been selected as Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY) while serving aboard USS Columbus (SSN 762).

Sailors that show outstanding initiative and commitment to the Navy’s mission and teamwork are selected as Sailor of the Year and Junior Sailor of the Year after standing before a board of senior Sailors. Baxter was selected for his impressive work ethic, providing superior assistance for every Sailor that entered the Administration office.

“My favorite part of my job is working hand-in-hand with each Sailor to fix their issues,” Baxter said. “I love being part of the submarine force.”

Baxter joined the Navy after a long line of family members who served or are currently serving their country: his grandfather, his father, his sister, his brother, his brother-in-law and his cousin.

He recently joined four other Columbus crew members during a namesake visit at Columbus, Ohio where he got to tour the Columbus Statehouse, the Columbus Supreme Court, attend a Columbus Blue Jackets hockey game and speak with many JROTC youth at various Columbus high schools, among other venues during their busy tour schedule.

USS Columbus Chief of the Boat, Master Chief Dustin Bruner, highlighted the importance of the boat’s work and the pride the crew has in their namesake, stating: “When we are out there, we are trying to make Columbus proud of us.”

The Columbus is a flexible, multi-mission platform designed to carry out the seven core competencies of the submarine force: anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, delivery of special operation forces, strike warfare, irregular warfare, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance and mine warfare. It’s 362 feet long and 33 feet wide, powered by a nuclear reactor to push the boat through the water at speeds of more than 20 knots while submerged.
