Wilmington Native Serves Aboard Floating Hospital During Humanitarian Mission

By Navy Office of Community Outreach

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada - Lt. Cmdr. Jennifer K. Eng-Kulawy, a native of Wilmington, Delaware, is a Navy pediatrician serving aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20), a large, mobile floating medical facility that provides assistance to victims of natural disasters while also providing international humanitarian relief.

“I’m here conducting expeditionary health care on site and inpatient duties to take care of patients on the ship [USNS Comfort],” Eng-Kulawy said. “I think what we’re doing is great, even though we can’t provide care for patients like would back home, we are still able to address their concerns or at the very least sit down and teach them about impactful decisions.”

During it's five-month deployment, June to November 2019, Comfort will provide medical assistance in support of regional partners and in response to the regional impacts of the Venezuela political and economic crisis. Comfort will conduct mission stops in Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Panama, Peru, Saint Lucia, St. Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Eng-Kulawy has served in the Navy for nine years and is a 2002 Concord High School graduate and 2006 State University of New York at Stony Brook graduate with a bachelor’s of science in biochemistry.

Both of her parents and brother reside in Wilmington, Delaware.
